President’s Notes: Seen any good beer lately?..... Recently, in my travels out and about, I discovered a few instances of out of the ordinary beer selections. I would guess that most of us do not brew our special creations often enough or as often as we would like. Therefore, we need to purchase some fine brews from time to time at the store. Of course, we tend to seek out the high quality beers. We are beer hunters, no doubt. I think that we should try to share this information with each other as much as possible. It is often the nice microbrew from the store that inspires a new recipe, or perhaps the search for a clone recipe. So, I would like to share a few recent discoveries with you. If you discover something you would like to share, email me, and I’ll pass it on to the group. OK, here goes. At Everett’s Liquors in South Beloit, I came across a couple rarities. They had some Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, and the 90 Minute IPA. They also have a few brews from New Holland Brewing Co., and my personal favorite, Old Rasputin Imperial Stout from North Coast Brewing Co. Everett’s also has a nice selection of imports, including some Belgian Ales. I picked up a 6 pack of Lion Stout from India. Not bad stuff. I’m glad I tried something new. Later that week, I stopped in to the Quick Stop on Elevator Rd. in Roscoe. This is next to Crock’s Pub for you townies! I met the liquor manager there who worked for Logli’s for 20 years. He is trying to provide a progressive mix of beers, and hopes to attract some of the beer lover segment. The surprises there included some of the Seasonal ales from Sprecher. They had the Imperial Stout, and Abbey Trippel along with the regular lineup of Sprecher stuff. Another surprise was the addition of Tyranena Brewing Co. Tyranena Brewwing Co. is located about an hour from here in Lake Mills, WI. I have toured their brewery, and sampled a number of their brews, and have been pretty pleased. They are well known for their “Bitter Woman” IPA and Indian themed brews like Stone Teepee Pale Ale and Blackhawk Porter. I scored a six pack of their seasonal selection “Rocky’s Revenge”. This particular batch was aged in Bourbon Barrels. And I’m here to tell you that stuff is tasty! A great find for $6.99. So,…..seen any good beer lately?
Meeting Notes: Not a whole lot to report this month. We talked about a few things and then we drank some beer. And a good time was had by all. If only every night could be like that…The things we talked about were the Chilton Trip, tickets go on sale March 1st, so let David Denale know if you want to go. Ryan has spoken with the managers of Garrett’s about having Homebrew nights like we had at Vicker’s before they closed. He said we can do it any Friday in March except the 17th. So whether you have some beer to share or not, come on out, we will be sending out an email as to the Friday of Homebrew night at Garrett’s. Ken Schulz mentioned the National Homebrewers Conference. It takes place in Orlando, June 22-24. The full details are available thru Beertown.org, here is a direct link to the page. So like I said earlier, we talked about a few things, and then we drank some beer…The Style for Febrewary was American Ales, this could be a pale, amber or brown ale. The results of the tastings were: Style Open 1st Ken Schulz – Pale Ale 1st Chuck Nolen – Alt 2nd Chuck Nolen – Amber Ale 2nd Pat Cunningham – Double IPA 3rd Lynn Foster – Brown Ale 3rd Ryan Cooper – Mild HM Ryan Cooper – Amber Ale The March Contest style will be Munich Dunkel. Don’t forget that April will be Extract American Brown Ale for the AHA contest. Website Notes: If you don’t already know, the club’s website can be found at http://www.forestcitybrewers.org . Ryan has been doing a lot of updating and changing things around, so drop by and have a look. If you have a suggestion, send him an email at forestcitybrewer@homebrew.com .
Club Event Notes: Just a reminder about the trip to the Wisconsin Microbrewers Festival in Chilton on the 21st of May, the tickets go on sale March 1st, $40.00 for ticket and bus. Please contact David Denale ASAP, as he needs to get a head count of who is going. You can talk to him at the meeting Wednesday, or email him at br3w3r@earthlink.net . As mentioned in the Meeting Notes, we will be holding a Homebrew Night at Garrett’s Pub @ The Golf Shack on Friday March 31st. This is a chance for us to get out there, serve some samples, talk to people, hand out club info, and try to attract some new members. If you have some brew you are proud of and would like to share, please let me know. These events can be a lot of fun, and we are lucky to have the cooperation of a nice place like Garrett’s to do it. I will be sending out more information by email as the event gets closer. And whether you have beer to serve or not, come over and join us, and talk to the people that are sampling and grab a pint from our hosts.
Competition Corner: Since this is the only local competition for a while, I will metntion it again….The Urban Knaves of Grain are holding their 8th Annual Drunk Monk Challenge on March 11th at Walter Payton’s Restaurant. This is an AHA sanctioned competition, as well as a qualifying event for The Masters Championship of Homebrewing. The full details of the event are available at http://knaves.org/dmc/ . Patronizing the events of other Homebrew clubs is a great way to get our name out there and network with the other clubs in the area and potentially get more participants at our events, so if you are able to go to any of these events, make sure to mention FCB to organizers…
A Little Beer Humor:
A Horse walks into a
bar, orders a beer, sits down at one of the tables,
and starts reading his paper. The bartender is a bit
shocked by all this, but pours the beer, and brings
it over to the horse, who proffers a ten dollar bill
for it. Norm Quotes from "Cheers"
SAM: "What's new,
Normie?"
