Next summer
seems like a long from now, but we have something quite
exciting in store for next year. For those who don’t know,
the American Homebrewers Association is hosting their 2003
National Homebrewers Conference in Chicago. This is the
Silver Anniversary Event and The Chicago Beer Society is
brewing 50 gallons of their Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout as
the event’s commemorative beer.
We have been asked to participate in this event. Our degree
of participation has not been determined, but it is an honor
and we have accepted. Our club will most likely participate
in the Club Night and host the Hospitality Suite for several
hours during the weekend. I have never been to an AHA
conference, so I will use the words of others to describe
the event.
This excerpt is taken from a fall issue of the Beer Buzzette
publish by the Chicago Beer Society.
The folks at CBS as well as the Urban Knaves of Grain (UKG)
and the Brewer’s of South Suburbia (BOSS) homebrew clubs
were pleased to learn their combined bid had been chosen for
Chicago to be the site of the 2003 American Homebrewers
Association National Conference. Hundreds of homebrewers
will descend on the Holiday Inn O’Hare from June 19-21, as
it becomes the center of the homebrew universe. “While we
produce many craft beer events,” said conference chair Jeff
Sparrow, “the people who run CBS are still homebrewers at
heart.” “We are pleased to team with the UKG and BOSS to
produce this event.” The participation of many other clubs
in necessary to make it a success. Details how your club can
become involved are available at www.chibeer.org/aha03.
Events include the final rounds of the National Homebrew
Competition, symposiums by homebrew and professional
luminaries and, of course, lots of homebrew. New this year
will the Saturday afternoon slant toward the pairing and
appreciation of food with beer. This will culminate on
Saturday evening during an event called Real Beer, Real
Food. This event is still in the planning stages and will
feature lots of great cheeses, sausages, and other
delicacies paired with great commercial ales and lagers...
This excerpt is taken from the Homebrew Clubs section of the
October, 2002 issue of Zymurgy, and summarizes the Club
Night Event at last years conference in Irving, Texas.
The Thursday Club Night event at the conference is always a
fun time, and this year was no exception. With 15 clubs
serving their best homebrew, plus beers brewed by the staff
of the Club Night sponsor Beer, Beer, and more Beer, there
were plenty of tasty suds to go around. The beers were
wonderful, as you would expect, but the clubs also wowed
attendees with some scrumptious grub. The Urban Knaves of
Grain served gumbo and the Kansas City Beer Meisters
tantalized us with their ever popular barbecue ribs…
When the Club Night shut down at 11 PM, the party moved to
the hospitality suite where the Fellowship of Oklahoma Ale
Makers had 12 kegs of homebrew waiting for us. They also had
smoked pecans and pickled garlic to snack on. The party
continued until the hotel pulled the plug at 2 AM…
As you can read, this event is about food as well as beer. I
am told that each club tries to surpass other clubs with
their beer and food selection as well as presentation.
Imagine Charlie Papazian or other well-known homebrewing
gurus drinking our beer and eating our food. It’s a real
opportunity to our club to make a strong impression on the
homebrewing world.

Last
Meeting
Last month’s meeting was well attended by both old and new
members, as well as a new face – Stan Gifford brought along
his friend Carlos to sample the club’s brew. Hope to see a
few more new faces at this month’s meeting!
Pat Cunninngham and several other members expressed concern
over a virus that has appeared in their systems attached to
club e-mails. They asked that everyone take a look in their
system to be sure they had not been infected or (even
worse!) that you are the one spreading this virus around!
The club’s not for profit status was discussed again and it
was decided that we would take one more month to consider
our options and then vote at the November meeting. Anyone
who still hasn’t made up their mind can review the pros and
cons in last month’s Barley News (under President’s notes).
Come ready for further discussion and a final vote on the
twentieth.
It’s that time of year again. We accepted nominations for
officers at the last meeting. The following slate was
decided upon and final elections will be held on the
twentieth:
President – Pat Cunningham (incumbent) v. Jim Didier
Secretary – Rich Theyerl (incumbent) v. Brian
Treasurer – Nikki Lawson (incumbent) v. Anita Megas
Activities Director – Ken Lonergan (incumbent) v. Lynn
Foster
Web Site Coordinator – Andy Freidl (unopposed)
We look forward to a lively campaign with much debate
followed by an honest and scandal-free election. May the
best candidate win!
December’s Taster’s Guild will be combined with the
Christmas party. It will be held at Rich and Maryanne’s
house (8000 E. Riverside Boulevard – see either of them at
the next meeting for directions) on Saturday, December 14th
starting at about 7pm. It usually runs very late into the
night with one or two members being (literally) carried out
of the house in the wee hours of the morning. They will
provide beer (bottled and home brew), some wine and a wide
selection of cocktails for those not interested in beer.
Spouses and significant others are very welcome. We ask that
you bring any interesting beers that you have lying around
and an appetizer to share.
Ken Schultz is planning a beer education day at his house –
the AHA has a kit that contains the most common off-flavors
that you can add to beer to teach your palate to identify
these compounds in beer. The cost would be about $17 a
person. See Ken if you are interested for dates, times and
availability.
Ryan gave a great presentation on the Oktoberfest style and
then selected Ken to present this month’s style (Porter).
