April 2003

Abbreviated Version Of the April 2003 edition of the Barely News

Hello fellow FCBer’s,

It’s only April.  The weather is just starting to turn nice.  And the summer weekends are already filling in rapidly.  Jim Didier is making final arrangements for The Great Taste of the Midwest, the Flotilla Committee members are picking a date for our summer picnic, and 2003 National Homebrew Conference details are being finalized.

The NHC committee members met this past week.   The 2003 NHC will be held on June 19-21 in Rosemont, IL.  This is a huge event and its hosted right in our backyard.  As most members know, our club will participate in the Thursday night Club Night and host the Hospitality Suite from 9-11 AM on Saturday Morning.  Now the Saturday morning time slot is not highly desirable, but not actually too bad.  Saturdays bring in quite a few more people for the conference than do other days.

Thursday night Club Night will be our chance to shine.  We are going to make some effort to separate ourselves from the crowd.   We have decided to capitalize on the “Forest” in The Forest City Brewers.  Our table will have forest theme and our brews will be named after trees and such.  An example would include Tall Pines Pale Ale and Maple Creek Porter.  Ryan Cooper is coordinating the brew style and names.

We are looking for members to brew beer for this event, but only if you plan to attend.  Some styles are already covered and we are trying not to double up on styles.  A list of styles and potential brewers is included below.  If you really want to brew your favorite Pale Ale, and someone else has that category covered, go ahead.

The preferred method of distributing the beer is from a corny keg.  If you don’t have a kegging system, there are plenty of members who have extra corny kegs who would be willing to condition your brew until the time of the event.

Also we will meet at Der Rathskellar for our April meeting.   It’s located at 1132 Auburn Street in Rockford.   LT’s has been shutdown for the month of April.  See you on Wednesday.

Here are some notes from the NHA Committee Meeting.  These are only proposals and by no means final.  Some members do not even know that their name is on this list.  If you want to brew or cook something special, please let us know ASAP.
